Director’s Statement

A dream that took one man from a small farm in Indiana to the coast of Savannah, GA. A random garage find on a hot summer day. His son, uncertain whether he could live up to the expectations.

I remember my father sorting through the shelves of the garage. He came across an old bin he'd brought back from home during our last trip. Inside, he found an old assignment he'd turned in for class when he was about my age; fifteen maybe? Young. It was a letter to his father. It spoke of how he'd wanted to make his father proud. That never left me.

Growing up, I grew more aware of the strain in their relationship. Now that my grandfather has grown old, I've seen a change in him. I see my dad sitting next to him, and they both smile, whereas it used to be that only my father would smile. I see progress.

I've always been fond of slice-of-life projects. When developing this script, I reminisced back to the times my father drove me out to the old baseball field in my hometown. He was always working overtime to provide for his family. I understand that now, and cherish the time he set aside to practice with me. I always knew this story would center around a huge moment, but showcase it casually. The most significant moments in our lives are not always obvious.

My grandfather loved Gunsmoke, and I remember it being on in the background every time we visited my father's family on their farm. He was a stubborn man, but he'd lived a hard life. I understood that my slice of life would be for my father and grandfather. It would draw from my own and his relationship with my dad. A nod that I understood they struggled for my chance to succeed.

I wrote Field 4 to express my gratitude for the love my father has for me. To say thank you. To show how proud I am to be his son.
